What Is a Mic Test?
A mic test is a tool that records a short clip from your microphone, shows its level live, and plays it back so you can hear how the mic sounds.
This mic test runs in your browser. The recording stays on your device, and nothing is uploaded.
How to Use the Mic Test
- Press Record 5 seconds.
- Allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- Hold the phone 15–30 cm from your mouth.
- Speak normally and watch the level meter move.
- Play the recording back and listen for muffling, crackle or silence.
Why Does the Browser Ask for Microphone Permission?
The browser asks for microphone permission because websites can't use your microphone until you allow it. If you tapped Block by mistake, reset it:
- Chrome: tap the icon left of the web address, open Permissions, and allow the microphone.
- Safari on iPhone: tap the page settings button in the address bar, then allow the microphone for this site.
How Do You Read the Mic Test Results?
Read the mic test results by what the meter and the playback show.
| Result | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No signal on the meter | Permission blocked, or a headset mic is in use | Allow access; disconnect Bluetooth headsets |
| Very quiet signal | Mic hole blocked by a case, film or dirt | Remove the case; clean the hole gently |
| Muffled playback | Water sitting on the mic mesh | Let the phone dry fully |
| Crackling playback | Moisture or a failing mic | Dry the phone, then retest; get service if it persists |
Why Is My Mic Muffled After Water?
Your mic is muffled after water because a film of water is sitting on the mesh over the microphone hole. The water blocks sound from reaching the mic. It clears as the phone dries.
A speaker cleaner can't clear a microphone. A speaker cleans itself by moving air, but a microphone doesn't produce sound, so it can't push water out. Drying is the fix: follow the steps to dry a wet phone, then run this test again.
Where Is the Microphone on a Phone?
The main microphone on a phone is at the bottom edge, and most phones have more mics at the top and near the camera.
- Bottom edge: the primary mic for calls, often beside the charging port. Water in the area can affect it; see water in the charging port.
- Top edge: a second mic for noise reduction.
- Near the camera: a mic for video recording on many phones.
Samsung's support pages place the primary microphone at the bottom of Galaxy phones.
What If the Mic Still Doesn't Work?
If the mic still doesn't work, check these five things in order.
- App permissions: make sure the app you use has microphone access in Settings.
- Bluetooth: a connected headset takes over the mic. Turn Bluetooth off and test again.
- Case or film: remove anything covering the mic hole; Samsung lists cases and films as a common cause.
- Restart: turn the phone off for 30 seconds, then on.
- Diagnostics: on Samsung Galaxy phones, run the microphone check in the Samsung Members app.
If the speaker is the problem when callers can't be heard, use the earpiece cleaner.
Does the Mic Test Work With Headsets and Earbuds?
Yes, the mic test works with headsets and earbuds. Choose the input in your browser's microphone permission menu or your device's sound settings. To check the earbud speakers too, run the speaker test.
