Phone Speaker Not Working

Phone Speaker Crackling or Distorted? Causes and Fixes

2 min read

Why Is My Phone Speaker Crackling?

Your phone speaker crackles because something is stopping the diaphragm from moving cleanly. Five causes cover most cases:

  • Water on the speaker mesh.
  • Debris resting on or near the diaphragm.
  • A pressure change inside a water-resistant phone.
  • Distortion at maximum volume, when the speaker reaches its limit.
  • A damaged speaker, such as a torn diaphragm.

The other speaker problems are covered in phone speaker not working.

Is Crackling a Sign of a Blown Speaker?

It depends on when it crackles. Crackling at every volume, in every app, after the phone is fully dry, points to a damaged speaker. Crackling only near maximum volume usually means the small speaker is straining, not that it's broken. iFixit's answers community notes that phone speakers are built to run at maximum volume, though long stretches at full volume can shorten their life.

How to Fix Crackling After Water

  1. Dry the phone: drain the ports and leave it in moving air.
  2. Run up to 3 cycles of the speaker cleaner in Water Eject mode, speaker facing down.
  3. Make a call for a few minutes. Samsung notes that speaker vibration during a call can clear moisture left on the front mesh.
  4. Recheck the sound after 24 hours of drying.

Why Does My Speaker Crackle Only at High Volume?

Your speaker crackles only at high volume because small phone speakers distort as they approach their limit. It's usually a normal trait of the speaker, not a fault. Lower the volume one or two steps and the crackle should stop. Run the volume ramp in the speaker test to hear where the distortion starts.

Can a Pressure Change Make a Speaker Crackle?

Yes, a pressure change can make a speaker crackle. Samsung says Galaxy speakers can sound quiet, crackly or distorted after a large change in air pressure, because of the phone's water-resistant seals. The pressure equalizes over time. Sliding the SIM tray halfway out for a moment speeds it up. Muffled sound after a flight has the same cause; see phone speaker muffled.

Can Software Cause Speaker Crackling?

Yes, software can cause speaker crackling, especially if it happens in only one app. Check these in order:

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Update the system software and the app.
  3. Test in Safe mode on Android. If the crackle stops, a downloaded app is the cause, according to Samsung.

When Is a Crackling Speaker a Repair Job?

A crackling speaker is a repair job when the crackle stays after drying, cleaning and software checks.

  • Crackle at every volume, in every app, after 24 hours of drying.
  • A rattle you can feel or hear from loose parts.
  • Visible damage to the speaker grille or the phone's frame.
